By Haruna Salami
The Senate has called for adequate budgetary allocation for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT for optimal performance.
Chairman Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Smart Adeyemi, (Kogi West), made this call in a maiden meeting of the committee with him as chairman on Thursday.
Emphasising on the need to make adequate budgetary allocation for the FCT, Senator Adeyemi said “what I have seen in the budget can’t meet the needs of a developing city like Abuja”.
He also used the occasion to call on the FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello to “make land available for civil servants who want to have roof over their head”.
He emphasised the need to open up more satellite towns in the territory to accommodate rising population in the city
Senator Smart gave the assurance that the National Assembly would evolve legislation that would reposition the territory.
Speaking in a similar vein, Senator Jibrin Isah (Kogi East) called on the FCT Minister to partner investors to develop the rural areas of the FCT to raise the internally generated revenue and develop the city.
Senator Jibrin equally congratulated Adeyemi for the well-deserved appointment as chairman of the FCT Committee, the position he has held before.
It will be recalled that Adeyemi was appointed Chairman Senate Committee on FCT minor changes in the Senate standing committees by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan on resumption from the long recess last Tuesday.
Adeyemi was chairman of Aviation committee before the “minor reshuffle”.
